Caleb Ewan of Australia won stage 7 in Italy but Valter keeps the pink jersey. Caleb pulled away with 150 meters to go to take his second victory of the Giro. If you watch the start you see three riders pull away from the get go. Can such tactics work in a race? Well, given the flat surface comparative to stage 6 it was not a bad tactic since you tend to expend less energy on it than say a mountainous terrain. The idea is to finish in a good time and have a go at winning the later stages. Simon Pellaud was the initial pace setter but that didn’t last long. Gaviria’s burst at the end seems to have caught the bunch by surprise but the other leading riders didn’t panic. Ewan has always been a good finisher and this was a calm and collected finish.
